Le Sénégal, la Gambie (pays enclavé du Sénégal) mais également la Guinée-Bissau sont des pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest majoritairement musulmans. Toutefois, ils possèdent une petite communauté chrétienne. En parallèle de ces croyances, se cultivent de fortes traditions.

Parmi ces traditions il y’a le Kankourang qui signifie l’homme au masque. Durant la saison des pluies qui se déroule d’avril à septembre, de jeunes garçons sont souvent amenés à se faire circoncire. C’est une pratique religieuse, en outre bien avant la religion Musulmane, la circoncision était pratiquée dans ces pays-là. C’était l’étape dans la vie d’un garçon qui lui permettait de devenir un homme. Ainsi, le Kankourang a pour rôle de protéger les jeunes garçons circoncis de tout mauvais esprit.

Il s’agit donc d’un rituel Mandingue dans lequel un homme vêtu d’un costume fait d’écorce d’arbre est accompagné de plusieurs hommes. Ainsi, ils marchent dans la rue et effectuent des danses spéciales, tout en effrayant les passants en les poursuivant ou en les repoussant avec des machettes. Il ne faut absolument pas rester à côté de l’un d’eux, la règle est de courir lorsque vous les croisez.

Cet événement, qui peut sembler fascinant ou effrayant pour les étrangers, est devenu avec le temps un spectacle de rue, une attraction pour la population.
